What Are You Even Doing with Your Life?
That’s the question I find myself asking daily because, honestly, I’m still figuring it all out. But first, let me introduce myself! I’m Sarah, a 25-year-old Filipino-American working in media.
Some time ago, I came across an exercise that encouraged introducing yourself without mentioning your name, age, ethnicity, or occupation. It really struck me—it's an invitation to express who you are at your core. So, here’s my reintroduction:
I care deeply about Filipino representation and creating more opportunities for the next generation of Filipino creatives. I’m a shy ambivert, but once you get to know me, I promise I can be a lot of fun. I love musicals, learning TikTok dances, and diving into anything artsy!
If you had asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said, “Doctor in the Navy.” I wanted to make my mom proud by entering the medical field, and my dad—who retired as a Master Chief in the Navy—would have loved that too.
Like many first-gen Filipino-Americans, I felt the pressure to meet my parents’ expectations: go to college, pursue a medical career, and fulfill that sense of “utang na loob.” I often felt lost because my path didn’t align with what I truly wanted. While my peers had their futures mapped out, I struggled to define my own identity and aspirations.
Looking back, it’s clear that none of my childhood activities pointed to a future as a Doctor in the Navy. Instead, I was busy being creative: making videos, crafting DIY projects, taking photos, designing clothes, drawing, painting, sewing, and upcycling.
Now, as a 25-year-old, I’m focusing on healing my inner child and following wherever inspiration takes me. Growing up, I could look at something on Pinterest and recreate it without instructions, just experimenting until I found what worked.
That’s the same spirit I’m bringing to Kilig Ko. I’ve never built a business before, and I’m still learning about merchandise, but I’m eager to grow and create something meaningful for myself and for other Filipino-Americans who might relate to my journey.
Thank you for reading this far! I hope to use this community as a sounding board throughout this process, inspiring others to take the leap and follow their hearts. After all, what’s the point of living if it’s not for yourself?
