There’s something about the start of Filipino American History Month that always hits different,, especially when you’re surrounded by our own people. Kilig Ko's first event of October was the FilAm Fiesta at 714 Market in 2ND&PCH in Long Beach, and it was the PERFECT-BEST way to kick off the season!

I spent the early morning finishing shirts, counting tags, and packing whatever I could so I would be ready for a long day. Preparation that week had been nonstop. I had been up almost every day making items and doing last-minute production the day of the event. By the time I arrived, people were already on site. The shopping center opened before the market event start, and customers showed up while I was still setting up. I remember juggling unpacking the table and talking to the first shoppers who asked about sizes. The whole day moved fast from there.

The crowd stayed busy all day. It was packed and non-stop. I sold out of most of my stock. My embroidered applique denim sun and the baby tees were among the first items to go. Seeing so many pieces move so quickly was overwhelming... in the best way. I left the event tired, but fulfilled, because sales confirmed something I’d been feeling: there is a real need for Filipino-specific designs.

People came from different places. Some told me they had bought from me last year. Others said they saw us on Insta and came out to support. A few people drove from further away, including a handful who traveled from Oxnard. Those moments of connection made the day feel personal. My mom and sister was with me the whole time, helping sell and pack. Having them there mattered. They took part in the work and enjoyed meeting customers. It was meaningful to see my fam help during one of the busiest days I have had.

Running a month of weekly events means there is no time to rest. October is a full month for Kilig Ko. After this event I had to replenish most of my inventory within FIVE DAYS. The production pressure is real. I was in non-stop embroidery mode for weeks just to keep up.

But at the end, this event cleared a business question I have been thinking for a while: should I make my brand broader or keep it specifically Filipino? Seeing the turnout, the people who chose Filipino-themed pieces, and the way my booth stood out among other vendors confirmed the value of specificity. For months I have had doubts about staying niche, but the response at this pop-ip felt like validation. Specific cultural focus creates connection and builds loyalty. There are practical takeaways from this day. Events like this give me real-time product testing. In-person feedback helps decide which items to bring online.

I am grateful for the support, for the returning customers, and for the new faces who stopped by because they found me on Instagram. I am also grateful for my family who stepped in to help when things got hectic. The FilAm Fiesta reminded me why I do this work. It reminded me that Kilig Ko’s Filipino focus matters.

Hoping for more months like this one: loud, busy, and full of community. <3
